TSH levels in premenopausal women awaiting hysterectomy

TSH levels in premenopausal women with sub acute uterine problems were evaluated as an elective indicator to ascertain imbalances, if any, in hormonal equilibrium in them. 40 ladies were selected randomly. Majority of them were below 40 years of age. They all were to undergo hysterectomy soon. Data on their age, race, education, menstrual status, contraceptive measures adopted, and other reproductive history were collected. Blood samples were taken by venipuncture after requested 12 hour fast. Samples were subjected to Chemiluscent Immunoassay and TSH values were determined. A wide variation in TSH values was seen. 40 percent of the women had the values outside present reference range of 0.5 μIU/ml to 3 μIU/ml. Though the deviation is not so large but with all probability it is indicative of the tendency for hypothyroidism. However, it was still to affect the thyroid. The T₃ and T₄ levels in the ladies of risk group were well within normal range of reference. From these it may be said that some sort of hormonal imbalance in such women have set in and might have contributed with other factors in developing uterine problems
