Abstract

There is a concurrent decline in the productivity and crop yields due to increased incidence of drought episodes because of the emerging global changing climate and expansion in the irrigated land not being the viable solution in many areas to enhance the crop productivity. The use of synthetic fertilisers, fungicides and other chemicals till date has already drained away the soil from its major nutrients and have killed beneficial microorganisms in it. Therefore, with the emerging crisis of the global climate change and concern about the environmental impact of the agriculture sector and its production system there is a need to develop environmentally friendly and sustainable crop production processes that help to combat under such abiotic stressors because it’s the need of an hour to equip crops with multi stress tolerance to mitigate the adverse effect of abiotic stresses like drought and meet the demand of the increasing global population.
