Abstract

The challenges in crude oil price and its depleting resources along with political intervention have lead the energy scavenging society to look for alternate energy sources. With the present environmental constrains and the increasing energy dependency, biomass having immense potential can be looked for. Plant biomass, which is an abundant and renewable energy source rich in carbohydrates, can be converted to biofuels by microbes. This will meet the energy and food demand in single practice. Bioethanol is produced on industrial scale today. Biobutanol may be used in the near future as a supplement for gasoline, diesel and kerosene. Biofuels offer the promise of numerous benefits related to energy security, economics and the environment.
