The ecological contamination caused by various factors is serious issue in front of society, salt and heavy metals are major contributors of abiotic stress to plants. This initiates a series of morphological, physiological, biochemical and molecular changes in plants, which affect plant growth, development and productivity. Among these stress, salinity is the main stress which reduces the yields of food and cash crops by more than 50 percent worldwide. Salinity stress lead to oxidative stress which involve in the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in plant cells. To protect a cell from oxidative damage, excess ROS should be scavenged by antioxidant mechanisms, accumulation of compatible solutes, hormonal regulation or by Nitric Oxide. Plant employ some effective strategies to overcome salt induce stress. The review focuses on strategies opt by plant/plant cell to minimize the damage caused by oxidative stress.
