An Overview of Diversity and Cultivation Prospects of Nutmeg in Karnataka

Abstract

Nutmeg, being a unique tree spices providing two distinct spices, nutmeg and mace. Both the spices are used as condiment and for medicinal purpose. Nutmeg is native of Indonesia (Moluccas Islands). In India, it is cultivated in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, North East India and Andamans. With respect to Karnataka, nutmeg has been cultivated in six districts in merely low. But there is good scope for cultivation and marketability of this spice in the state. Also, area, Production and productivity in state Karnataka is very and it is mainly due to the nonadoption of improve crop management practices and post-harvest handling technologies. Hence, the present practices, crop diversity and future strategies are needed to be strengthen in this crop are reviewed here.
