Combining ability and heterosis for yield and its components in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Abstract

Genetics of yield and its components was studied following diallel approach. Eight morphologically diverse parents were selected for crossing in diallel fashion. Combining ability analysis revealed that days to 75% flowering, plant height, number of productive tillers plant−1, ear length, number of grains ear−1, days to maturity, 1000-grain weight and grain yield plant−1 were governed by both additive and non-additive gene actions. Parents K 9107, PBW 343 and GW 373 were identified as most desirable general combiners for grain yield and its related characters. Cross combinations K 9107/PBW 343, K 9107/GW 373, K 9107/K 9162, K 9107/K 9465 and K 9107/K 8027 were superior for grain yield on the basis of specific combining ability and heterotic effects. It is concluded that good general combining parents and superior cross combinations could be utilized for further improvement.
