Abstract

Rice-wheat is the predominant cropping system of India, covering about 9.20 million ha area along with 38 per cent contribution to the national food basket. Continuous growing of this cropping system has led to deterioration in soil quality, resulting in a serious threat to agricultural sustainability. Growing short duration potato, vegetable or legumes in rice-wheat system may ameliorate soil fertility and break weed and disease complex cycles along with achieving food and nutritional security of the country.
