Abstract

Three varieties viz., DLV1, Himalini and No55x NL115 of flax stalks were collected from AICRP, MULLARP Scheme, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad and fibres were extracted through water, chemical and enzymatic retting methods during 2019-20. The extracted fibres were subjected to scouring and bleaching and assessed for fibre yield and quality parameters viz., fibre length, fineness, bundle strength, microscopic observation and solubility tests in different chemicals. The results of the study revealed that irrespective of flax varieties, urea retting method yielded higher percentage of fibre whereas, enzyme retting method produce longer length of the fibres with better fineness properties. Water retted raw fibre showed higher bundle strength compared to scoured and bleached fibres. Fibres were soluble in concentrated acid whereas insoluble in alkalies and solvents.
