Lesser known edible plants of the Hill districts of Assam- Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong, India

Wild edible plants are used for their medicinal properties besides food security. Consumption of these traditional wild plants benefits the human health such as prevention of some degenerative diseases. The tribal societies are still dependent on their traditional knowledge on the wild plant species and their products which evolved through generations of experience and practice. Therefore, emphasis should be given to explore the less known edible plants for popularization, neutraceuticals and medicinal values and conservation for human welfare. The present study deals with exploration, identification and documentation of some less popular plants consumed by the different tribes of Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong districts of Assam. This paper includes a total of 20 plant species have been identified out of which 5 belong to monocot and the rest 15 belong to dicot with their vernacular names, scientific name, family, time of availability, habitat and their uses.
