Abstract

Livestock sector plays a crucial role in the socio-economic development of rural households. It is also likely to emerge as an engine of agricultural growth in the coming decades. The period of the study is from 2000- 01 to 2019-20. The entire study is based on secondary data. Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) analysis used to compute the growth rate of the livestock population and milk and meat production in India. India shared more than 50% of the total number of buffaloes in the world. The growth rate of the sheep population in India was recorded at 1.18%. Production of buffalo and cow milk together constituted 92% of total milk production in India i.e., 182 MT. Globally, the growth rate of buffalo milk production was found to be higher and recorded at 3.73%. The growth rate of cow milk production (5.43%) was found to be higher in India, followed by buffaloes (4.03%). Further, growth rate of buffaloes’ meat production (1.34%) was found to be higher in the country, followed by sheep (1.19%).
