Performance of blackgram under different irrigation scheduling and integrated nutrient management

Abstract

During the summer seasons of 2022 and 2023, a field experiment was carried out at the Soil Conservation and Water Management Farm of Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture & Technology in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The study aimed to investigate the impact of different irrigation scheduling levels and integrated nutrient management practices on the yield and economics of urdbean. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design and replicated three times using urdbean variety ‘Shekhar-2’. The main plot consisted of three different irrigation scheduling levels, viz., I1 – 0.4 IW/CPE, I2 -0.6 IW/CPE, and I3 – 0.8 IW/CPE and sub-plots consisting of five different integrated nutrient management practices, viz. F1: 100% RDF, F2: 125% RDF, F3: 75% RDF + 2.5 t FYM ha−1, F4: 50% RDF + 5.0 t FYM ha−1 and F5: 50% RDF + 2.5 t FYM ha−1 + 1 t vermicompost ha−1. The results showed that irrigation scheduling I3: 0.8 IW/CPE resulted in significantly higher plant height (35.25 cm and 37.56 cm), number of branches plant−1(8.87 and 9.21), number of plant leaves (19.96 and 20.29) and dry weight at harvest(23.41 g and 24.36 g), grain yield (9.30 q and 9.90 q ha−1), stover yield (23.21 q and 24.03 q ha−1), biological yield (32.51 q and 33.92 q ha−1) and harvest index (28.49 and 29.00%) compared to I1: 0.4 IW/CPE and I2: 0.6 IW/CPE. Additionally, utilizing F5: 50% RDF + 2.5 tonnes FYM ha−1 + 1 tonne of vermicompost among the integrated nutrient management methods resulted in significantly higher plant height (35.25 cm and 37.56 cm), number of branches plant−1 (8.87 and 9.21), number of plant leaves (19.96 and 20.29) and dry weight at harvest (23.30 g and 24.66 g), grain yield (9.73 q and 10.27 q ha−1), stover yield (23.55 q and 24.76 q ha−1), biological yield (33.28 q and 35.03 q ha−1) and harvest index (28.99 and 29.04%) compared to other integrated nutrient management protocols during first and second year of study, respectively.
