Perceived constraints in livestock rearing by the farmers in Mahabubnagar district of Telangana

Abstract

Livestock is an integral part of the agriculture in Telangana state. 25.82 lakh families in Telangana are engaged in livestock rearing for their livelihood. Along with the economic prosperity by augmenting the farm income, livestock provide nutritional and livelihood security to the farmers. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to identify the perceived constraints faced by the farmers in livestock rearing and management. The study was conducted in Mahabubnagar district of Telangana state during 2022-23 and Garrett ranking technique was used to analyse the obtained data. The study revealed that the major perceived constraint by the farmers in overall were was lack of sufficient pasture lands for grazing the animals (68.07), non- availability of credit (63.97) high cost of inputs (58.95), high expenses related to proper housing (58.73) and incidence of pest and disease (58.58) under socio economic, feed and fodder and livestock management constraints.
