Food and feeding habits analysis ofSperata seenghala collected from Tapi River, Gujarat in relation to physicochemical water quality parameters
Abstract
The present study was carried out to analyze the gut content of freshwater catfish (sperata seenghala) from the Tapi River of Ukai, Gujarat, India. Physicochemical water quality parameters (such as pH, temperature, nitrate, nitrite, chloride, DO, and total hardness) were also carried out in the present investigation. A total of 144 samples of sperata seenghala were collected from the Tapi River for analysis of gut content from February 2023 to May 2023. The analysis of the gut content of catfish (sperata seenghala) provides information on the diet composition and feeding habits of fish. The stomach content was analyzed by gravimetric method (index of fullness), numerical method frequency of occurrence (Oi) farther observed in a compound microscope. The results of the present study shows that the most dominant food items in sperata seenghala is Chaoborus americanus, aquatics worms, spirogyra spp., Stigeoclonium spp., cyanobacteria spp., tanypodinae larsia, Mysis delicate. The other food items were fish scales, diatoms, plankton, algae, shrimp, Rotifera, oikopleuridae, copepod nauplii, doliolid, mosquito larva, Sarcodina, Donnell Arcella spp., Cyphoderia spp., chaoborus crystallins, Drain fly larva. The result indicated that sperata seenghala were mainly carnivorous.
