Additional report and taxonomic description of a vulnerable shark species, milk shark (Rhizoprionodon acutus (Rüppell, 1837) from Dholai fishing harbour, southwest coast of Gujarat, India
Abstract
This study focused on Rhizoprionodon acutus, also known as the milk shark, which inhabits the Indian coastal waters. The main objective was to identify and describe the milk shark species in the region and assess its conservation status. A male specimen was collected from a trawler operating near the southwest coast of Gujarat. Detailed morphometric parameters were observed and recorded for taxonomic identification. The results reveal that R. acutus was first time documented at Dholai fishing harbour and along the Arabian Sea coast of south Gujarat. This paper provides comprehensive details about the morphometric parameters observed in adult specimens of R. acutus. This research significantly contributes to the understanding of the milk shark in Gujarat, shedding light on its distribution and providing a comprehensive description of its morphological traits.
