Abstract

The current study focus on indigenous technical knowledge (ITK) related to fishing crafts and gears used by the tribal community in Tapi district, Gujarat, India. Numerous study regarding crafts and gears in freshwater sector of India but this is the first attempt has been made to document the crafts and gears used in Tapi district. During the present survey (2022), a total of six types of traditional crafts and ten types of traditional gears being have been encountered from the Tapi district. The recorded crafts were nao or hodi/plank-built boat, nao/tin made boat, tarapa/catamaran, thermocol/thermocol platform, tube/rubber tube platform and fiber boat. Wide varieties of gears were recorded as chogia/cast net, aasu, jal/gill net, gul/pole and line, jarnia/hand net, panjaru/pot, mahajal/drag net, waga/machali kata/ hook and line, sorpan/scoop net and basket.
