Abstract

A field experiment was conducted during kharif 2006 and 2007 at Kanpur to evaluate the response of genotypes of urdbean (Vigna mungo L.) to sulphur fertilization in an Inceptisol. Application of sulphur at 25 and 50 kg S ha−1, being on par, recorded significant increase in growth and yield attributes, viz. height of plant, branches plant−1, pods plant−1, grains pod−1 and 1000-grain weight and grain and stover yields over no sulphur application. Genotype KU-300 was superior to other genotypes in respect of yield attributes and yield, whereas genotype KU-323 was superior in respect of protein content. Uptake of N, K and S both in grain and stover increased significantly with increasing levels of sulphur but phosphorus uptake was at par at 25 and 50 kg S ha−1.
