Heritability and genetic advance in Indian mustard [Brassica juncea (L.) Czern & Coss.)]

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted during rabi 2004–05 at Kanpur to study of direct selection parameters in Indian mustard [Brassica juncea (L.) Czern & Coss.)]. Heritability and genetic advance were studied in 45 F1s and 45 F2s derived from ten promising parents of India nmustard. Thee stimates revealed high heritability for oil content, days to maturity, number of primary branches plant−1, days to 50% flowering and incidence of white rust inboth the generations. Moderate heritability estimates were recorded for number of secondary branches plant−1, seed yield plant−1 and number of siliquae plant1in both the generations and length of mainraceme and number of seeds siliqua−1 only in F2 generation. Low estimates of heritability were observed for number of seeds siliqua−1 only in F1 and for plant height only in F2 generations. Moderate geneticadvance was observedfor numberof primary branches plant−1 and number of secondary branches plant−1 in both the generations. Low genetic advance wasobserved for number of siliquae plant−1, seed yield plant−1, length of main raceme, days to 50% flowering, plant height, oil content, days to maturity, 1000-seed weight and number of seeds siliqua−1 in both the generations and number of siliquae plant−1 only in F2 generation.
