The problems of new infectious disease and increase in bacterial resistance have created the necessity to develop new antimicrobials. Four compounds belonging to the class of tannins from two different extracts (methanol and acetone extracts) of a medicinal plant Calotropis procera, were found to be toxic to plant pathogens such as Pectobacterium carotovorum MTCC-1428 and Xenthomonas compestris MTCC-6843. Both the extracts inhibited the growth of micro-organisms by undergoing auto-oxidation and generating hydrogen peroxide when they come in contact with aerobic media. Biological activity of tannins against Xenthomonas compestris and Pectobacterium carotovorum has been obtained positive.
