Distribution of available sulphur and boronin soils of Balaghat and Mandla districts of Madhya Pradesh

Abstract

Distribution of sulphur and boron status of mixed red and black soils in Balaghat and Mandla districts (Madhya Pradesh) was assessed using global positioning system (GPS). Available S and B content in soils varied from 7.5 to 42.3, 0.20 to 4.27 and 2.8 to 45.3, 1.40 to 4.27 mg kg−1 in Balaghat and Mandla district, respectively. pH, electrical conductivity, organic carbon and CaCO3 in soils varied from 4.4 to 7.9, 0.11 to 0.66 dS m−1, 2.62 to 15.1 g kg−1 and 5.0 to 45.0 g kg−1 in Balaghat district, and from 4.8 to 7.8, 0.13 to 0.48 dS m−1, 2.7 to 15.5 g kg−1 and 2.5 to 53.5 kg−1 in Mandla district, respectively. Significant and positive correlation of sulphur with organic carbon (r=0.2565**) exhibited in Balaghat district. The soils of Mandla and Balaghat found 31 and 9 per cent deficient in available sulphur.
