Yield, nutrient uptake and quality of barley (Hordeum vulgare) with integrated use of farmyard manure and inorganic fertilizers

Abstract

The present experiment was conducted in micro-plots at Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh during winter season of 2009–10 to study the effect of farmyard manure (FYM) and inorganic fertilizers on yield, nutrient uptake and quality of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). Barley variety ‘Azad ’was superior to variety ‘Haritama ’in terms of yields and protein content. It recorded 22 and 31% higher grain and straw yields with application of farmyard manure 5 tonnes ha−1 and recommended dose of NPKSZn (80: 50: 50: 40: 5 kg ha−1) over application of FYM 5 tonnes ha−1 alone, respectively. This treatment also recorded highest protein content (10.44%). Nutrient uptake by both the barley varieties increased with increase in graded levels of fertilizers blended with FYM.
