Thirty seven genetically diverse genotypes of castor (Ricinus communis L.) including two checks i.e., Chandraprabha and T-3 were analyzed for nature and magnitude of variability and character association during kharif season 2009 at Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The analysis of variance revealed highly significant differences among the genotypes for all the characters studied. The highest genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) and phenotypic coefficient variation (PCV) were observed for seed yield plant−1, plant height and number of effective spikes plant−1. High heritability with high genetic advance was recorded in number of capsules in primary raceme, plant height and seed yield plant−1 indicating the predominance of additive gene action. Number of capsules in primary raceme and number of effective spikes plant−1 showed highly significant and positive correlation with seed yield.
