Yield and yield attributes of brinjal (Solanum melongena) germplasms of North East India

Abstract

An investigation was carried out during rabi season of 2009–10 and 2010–11 at the Horticulture Experimental Farm of the Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat (Assam), Indiato assessthe yieldand other characteristics including reaction to bacterial wilt of the available germplasms of brinjal. The highest fruit yield of 2.5 kg plant−1 was observed in GB 0916-02, followed by GB 09-02-02, GB 09–05 and GB 09–12 and JB 09–03 with fruit yield of 2.3, 2.2, 2.1 and 2.1 kg plant−1, respectively. GB 09-16-02 exhibited highest fruit number plant−1 (30) and plant height (33 cm). GB 09-02-02 was the best for fruit length (33 cm) and early flowering (117 days). GB 09–05 exhibited best performance for fruit diameter (12 cm) and single fruit weight (300 g). The long genotypes, viz. GB 09-16-02, GB 09-02-02 and GB 09–12 and round brinjals, viz. GB 09–05 and JB 09–03 were found to be resistant to bacterial wilt also. Hence, these genotypes may be promoted to develop as new varieties or may be utilized in the crossing programme as parents.
