Species-wise Comparative Carbon Sequestration Potential of Avenue Trees in NERIST Campus: A Case Study from Arunachal Pradesh, India

Abstract

The present study aimed to evaluate the species-wise carbon sequestration potential of avenue trees in the NERIST campus. The data collection during the study was done through total enumeration and non-destructive method was adopted to evaluate the carbon sequestration of avenue trees. A total of 54 species belonging to 49 genera and 28 families were reported from the North campus of NERIST. Fabaceae was the dominant family. A total of 1,261 avenue trees were recorded and they sequestered 1,156.13 tons of CO2 till date. At species level, Ficus religiosa exhibited the highest average carbon sequestration with 6328.69 kg/tree, followed by Eucalyptus sp. (3185.13 kg/tree), Casuarina equisetifolia (2234.58 kg/tree), Terminalia bellirica (1922.80 kg/tree), etc. Thus, avenue trees plays an important role in carbon sequestration, which has the potential to mitigate climate change in long run.
