Impact of Hydroponic Production on In vitro Rumen Fermentation Characteristics of Maize and Horse Gram: A Climate-change Perspective

Abstract

This study investigates the in vitro rumen fermentation characteristics of hydroponically grown fodder maize and horse gram, comparing their performance to conventionally grown counterparts. The aim is to assess the potential of hydroponic forages as a climate-smart solution for livestock feed, contributing to more sustainable and resilient agricultural practices. In vitro dry matter degradability, in vitro degradation kinetics, and in vitro gas production studies were conducted on both hydroponic and conventional fodder maize and horse gram. Hydroponic fodder maize had significantly (P<0.05) lower methane production potential compared to conventional fodder maize. At 24, 48, and 72 hours of incubation, the total gas, carbon dioxide, and methane production was significantly (P<0.05) higher in conventional fodder horse gram compared to hydroponic fodder horse gram. By assessing the fermentation characteristics of hydroponically grown fodder, this study contributed to the development of more sustainable and climate-friendly livestock production systems.
