Abstract

The present communication outlines precisely the role of cyanobacteria in eco-restoration of degraded lands for sustainable development of agriculture. Cyanobacteria are genetically highly diverse; they occupy a broad range of habitats perhaps demonstrating the abilities of their pioneering ancestors which were earlier inhabitant of the Earth. The results of my field experiments showed that inoculation of the cyanobacterial inoculum in the saline soil improved the physico-chemical status of the soil. The reports and data of several investigations undoubtedly designated that cyanobacterial inoculum could be used potentially for improving the saline soil fertility. These vital bio-agents are outstanding ideal microorganisms on this planet which are equipped with unique genomes, per se biologically active substances, which make them a potential agent for use in the reclamation and restoration of degraded lands.
