Identification of Cotton Species/Genotypes for Shallow Soil and Low Rainfall Situation of North Karnataka

Cotton is one of the important cash crops of Karnataka. Low rainfall and shallow soils are the major production constraints and identification of suitable species/genotypes for this situation was felt necessary. For the present study, the genotypes of zonal/state/national importance from arboreum herbaceum, hirsutum and hybrids were selected and evaluated over three years. The mean performance across all the three years indicated the excellent performance of herbaceum genotypes followed by arboreum genotypes. The genotype RAHS 131 (herbaceum group) and PA 183 (arboreum group) were identified as best suited for shallow soil and low rainfall situation.
