Correlation and Path Coefficient Analysis on Some Elite Maize Genotypes

Abstract

Ten experimental and released maize hybrids were evaluated in a Randomized Block Design, with three replications during Kharif 2003–04 at two diverse locations. Pooled data over both locations were used to study the correlation and path coefficients among six quantitative characters and their heritability. Significant positive correlations for grain yield were observed with days to 75% dry husk, plant height, ear height and number of ears. Further, significant desirable correlations were observed for days to 50 per cent silk emergence with days to 50 per cent pollen shedding tassels; ear height with plant height and ear height with number of ears. Days to 75% dry husk (94.6) followed by grain yield (85.5), were observed to be heritable traits and grain yield was appeared to be primarily influenced by number of ears per plot and ear height with longer maturity periods and secondarily by plant height.
