Seven varieties of maize were evaluated following diallel mating design for determining their utility as parents in the development of hybrids or high yielding composites. Data were analysed following analysis II of Gardner and Eberhart model (1966). The variances due to varieties (Vi), heterosis (Hij) and its components were significant for all the characters studied. The parent Vijay had good varietal effect for green fodder yield, crude protein (%), hemicellulose (%) and total ash (%). While J-1006 for green fodder yield, dry matter yield, cellulose (%) and acid detergent lignin (%). Good varietal effect was also revealed by parent JC 1459 for green fodder yield, cellulose (%) and acid detergent lignin (%), Crosses parbhat x JC 1459, Megha x J-1006 and Vijay x JC 1459 were identified as promising for possible use in developing broad base genetic population.
