PBW 343 based F2 populations were generated by crossing KB 35 (a Karnal bunt resistant BC3F5 line derived from PBW 343 *3/KBRL 22) and lines LR 349, LR 712, LR 725 (BC5F3 lines derived from PBW 343 *5/(HD2329 + Lr 24), where Lr 24 is a leaf rust resistance gene originally derived from Agropyron elongatum). The F2 segregation revealed two additive genes for Karnal bunt resistance. Complete resistance to leaf rust on account of Lr 24, was observed as F2 segregated in the expected monogenic fashion. Mild repulsion phase linkage was indicated by Chi-square contingency test for independence of segregation for Karnal bunt and leaf rust resistance. Good prospects were, however, indicated for combining the two traits in PBW 343 background in the material under study.
