Safe isolation distance is essential for production of quality hybrid seed in rice. It was found that an isolation distance of 50 m from foreign rice pollen was optimum as it resulted in negligible pollen shedders which were in accordance with seed production standards. Furthermore, a crop barrier can successfully be used to check contamination by foreign pollen. A combination of crop barrier and an isolation distance could help to economise space utilization for hybrid seed production by reducing the isolation distance under Punjab conditions.
