A full diallel analysis involving nine rice genotypes was used to study the inheritance of earliness, grain yield, quality and their component characters. Data from the parents and F1 crosses were analysed using Hayman (1954) method of diallel analysis. The estimates of D were significant for most of the traits studied. The values of H1 and H2 as well as the H2/4H1 indicated that there were unequal frequencies of the alleles at all the loci. There were pre-dominant alleles in the parents for the traits of interest. The degree of dominance averaged over all loci indicated over dominance for all the 16 characters studied. Narrow sense heritability estimates were high for nine out of 16 traits studied. For the remaining seven traits it was low, indicating the necessity for progeny testing.
