Abstract

Combining ability for forage yield and yield contributing characters was studied using eight lines in full diallel design. Analysis of variance showed that parents and crosses differed significantly for all the characters under study indicating the presence of sufficient variability in parental lines. The magnitude of variance due to SCA was greater than GCA variance for all the characters indicating the predominance of non-additive gene action. The parents RSSV-9, RSSV-47, NSS-05 and Kellar were good general combiners for majority of the characters. The hybrids RSSV-9 x RSSV-47, RSSV-9 x Kellar, RSSV-47 x Kellar, RSSV-64 x NSS-05 and RSSV-64 x NARISS-41 showed high significant sea effects for most of the forage yield and it's contributing characters. So these cross combinations could be used in forage sorghum improvement programme.
