Abstract

Eighty one, F1 cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) hybrids were analysed for genetic variability, correlation and path coefficients. High genetic variability combined with high heritability and genetic advance was observed for seed cotton yield, number of bolls, boll weight, harvest index and micronaire value which shows that these traits will respond to selection based on phenotypic performance. Estimates of correlation and path coefficient analysis showed that plant height, number of bolls, boll weight, harvest index, number of monopods and 2.5% span length had significant positive association with seed cotton yield. Also number of bolls, boll weight and harvest index had positive direct effect on seed cotton yield whereas plant height, number of sympods, number of monopods, 2.5% span length and days to maturity contributed mainly through number of bolls. Thus, selection on the basis of number of bolls, boll weight and harvest index will be effective in improving the seed cotton yield.
