Five varietal crosses viz., GT 1 x Shekhar (C1), GT 1 x TC 289 (C2), GT 1 x JLT 8 (C3), GT 1 x ES 3 (C4) and GT 1 x T 12 (C5) were selected to study the nature and magnitude of gene effects for yield and its component traits through generation mean analysis on six generations (P1, P2, F1, F2, B1 and B2). Significant epistatic gene effects were observed for all eleven characters in all the crosses. The dominant component was higher in magnitude than the additive component except for days to 50% flowering and length of capsule. Additive and dominant gene effects were equally important for number of capsules on main axis, number of capsules per plant, number of seeds per capsule and yield per plant. Duplicate type of epistasis was important in the inheritance of most of the characters. Thus additive, dominant and epistatic gene effects contribute significantly to the inheritance of various yield component traits in sesame.
