Eighteen genotypes of Gossypium hirsutum L. having different genetic background were converted into Cytoplasmic Male Sterile lines using the Gossypium harknessii Brandg source of Cytoplasmic Male Sterility through backcrossing. Seven backcrosses were attempted. These lines were evaluated in paired rows and the characteristics were recorded according to the UPOV Guidelines (2001) on maturity and growth, stem, leaf, flower, boll, seed and fiber. The male sterile and maintainer lines were similar to each other for all the character studied, except for male sterility. The similarity between A and B lines shows that the genetic background of the recurrent parent has been recovered fully and thus these lines can effectively be used in the hybrid breeding programme.
