One hundred thirty five genotypes comprising commercial cultivars and landraces were analysed for genetic diversity using Mahalanobis D2 statistics. Based on six characters the genotypies were grouped into eight clusters. Group VII had largest number of genotypes (25) followed by I and III with 20 genotypes each. Maximum intra and inter cluster divergence was found in group VI and VI vs. I, indicating efficient breeding programme can be formulated to improve yield potential by hybridization and selection of superior genotypes in segregating generations. No correlation existed between genetic and geographical diversity. Moderate magnitude of heritability in broad sense coupled with genetic advance as percentage of mean, phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variability in respect of seeds/pod, plant height and yield indicated the scope for selection of superior genotypes due to preponderance of additive gene action.
