Selection of ratings of distribution transformer a tool for optimum and efficient utilisation - A perspective of power reforms

Generally, the rating of Distribution Transformers (DT) is being selected based on total of contract demands of connected loads on each DT. The efficiency is also being calculated and designed accordingly. This-approach on one side seems to be correct. However, in actual condition the loading on DT particularly in Rural area do not reach to that designated load and therefore at low loads the desired efficiency cannot-be achieved.

Power reforms has directly or indirectly imposed many challenges and has mandated to reliable and efficient working of all equipment & items including DT of power system. With the Power Reforms the requirement has been changed and it attracts optimum and efficient usage of DTs.

This paper discusses requirement of proper selection of rating of Distribution Transformers (DT) for efficient-utilisation by DISCOMs. This is important as DISCOMs are independent entities and have to keep a tab on expenditure on revenue after the Power Reforms and introduction of Regulators.
