Abstract

This paper presents the reactive power management for the 1200 kV Ultra High Voltage AC (UHVAC) transmission system. Extra High Voltage (EHV) and Ultra High Voltage (UHV) transmission systems require reactive power compensation to maintain the system voltages within operating rangexs. The effect of fixed and variable compensation on the loadability of the line is discussed.

The proposed 1200 kV transmission line between Wardha – Aurangabad in India is simulated. Application of Controlled Shunt Reactor (CSR) for variable reactive power compensation of the above line is studied. Detailed modelling of 1200 kV line with variable compensation using CSR has been realized on PSCAD software. A Combination of fixed and variable reactive compensation is proposed for the above transmission line.
