River as a source of income generation: a case study of the river Kapili in Marigaon, Assam, India

Abstract

The Kapili River is a vital source of income generation for the basin communities of Marigaon district Assam, India, which not only has significance for its direct water requirement to society and natural ecosystem functioning but also for promoting various economic activities. In this study the due importance has been given rivers as a source of income generation. To inquiry in this matter both primary and secondary set of data has been used and statistical methods implemented for deriving the results of economic purpose. The purpose of the inquiry is to examine how far the people are economically benefited by the way of income generation from the river. Here, an attempt has been made to analyse what are the different economic activities are performed in the study area and how they are related to River Kapili. Furthermore, in what extent the community's exploitation of the river for economic benefits for the people of Marigaon district. In the study it found that the not only beneficial for water supply and aquatic economic activity but also it provides necessary materials like suitable mud for making potteries and bricks. The river is one of the economic lifelines of the district.
