Value implies something good or useful. Though according to Indian tradition, there are four values called Puruārthas, viz. dharma, artha, kāma and moka, the first three values occupy a less significant position in the Upaniads, compared to the fourth one i.e. moka. Moreover, there are values which are recognized by all. They are applicable in all situations and everywhere around the world. Some important values which are elaborated in the Upanis.ads are Satya (truth), Śraddhā (faith), Dāna (liberality), Dama (self-control), Tapas (penance), Brahmacarya (chastity). Through these values, in the Upaniadic age, the system of value – based education is prevailed. Again some other values i.e. Ahimsā (non-violence), Svādhyāya (regular study of the Vedas), Tyāga (renunciation), Prema (love), Dayā (compassion) etc. are found here, which are very significant from social and educational perspective. They are highly relevant in the context of the present-day society also.
