Friedel craft's acylation of p-cresol with acetic anhydride to p-cresylacetate carried out over heterogeneous acid clay catalyst is reported. Bentonite clay samples exchanged with different metal exchanged cations were prepared and used in synthesis of p-cresylacetate. Among these catalysts Al3+-bentonite was found to be more active for Friedel craft's acylation. It showed 72% conversion to ester upon refluxing the p-cresol (15 mmole) and acetic anhydride (10 mmole) for 14h. The influence of various reaction parameters such as molar ratio of reactants, amount of catalyst, the reaction time and using different solvents on the yield of p-cresylacetate have been investigated. The activity of the clay catalyst after regeneration has also been studied.
