Organic matter was destroyed by H2O2 treatment on selected eight soils and herbicide adsorption was carried on them to assess the role of organic matter in adsorption. The adsorption maxima decreased in all H2O2 treated soils when compared to that of untreated soils. This decrease was up to 37.7% with metoxuron and upto 38.8% with isoproturon. The adsorption was studied on CBD (citrate bicarbonate dithionite) treated soils to evaluate the role of free iron and aluminum oxides on adsorption. The per cent decrease in adsorption over untreated soils was upto 22.1 per cent for metoxuron and 24.0 per cent for isoproturon.
