Krill oil derived from miniature marine crustaceans has been discovered to be opulent with health promoting components. The oil is rich source of phospholipids, ω--3 -fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DPA), also the antioxidant astaxanthin. Krill oil is now considered to be superior to the customary fish oil owing to its stability, less mercury and better bioavailability of the fatty acids. It is known to confer numerous health benefits such as cholesterol lowering, cardio protection, antiarthritic effect, suppression of hepatic steatosis, cancer remediation, menstrual disorder alleviation and cognitive enrichment. This review explores the validated and claimed health benefits of krill oil. Scouring the literature database revealed various stages of krill oil research providing fertile ground to further explore.
