Abstract

Dr. Lohia had special attraction of Marxist philosophy along with influence of philosophy of Gandhi. However, Dr. Lohia put forth his socialist thought by adopting a middle path between these two contradictory thoughts keepin in view the Indian social environment. The centralization of power in both the systems of communism and capitalism, the lack of balance between freedom and equality, the origin of inequality and the lack of initiative of the individual due to many defects, asserting the concrete idea that both systems have become unprepared, the scope for individual freedom and initiative, the award of decentralization of political and economic power, the cooperation in the field of consumption and distribution Lohia expects the adoption of principles, the importance of labor dignity and the adoption of small scale techniques and the use of democratic means to achieve socialism through constructive work in a non-violent way. An egalitarian society can only be created by ending inequality. That is why he opposed both capitalist and communist systems and emphasized on the establishment of socialism through democratic means. Instead of reducing private ownership of means of production and nationalizing industry, he emphasized on the cooperative principle to increase individual self-reliance and highlighted the importance of labor.
