Abstract

At a time when ignorance was spreading in the Indian society in the 18th century, Raja Rammohan Roy created a new consciousness in the Indian society by giving the task of reviving the lifeless Indian society. Raja RammohanRoy founded ‘AtmiyaSabha’ in 1815. In 1818, he launched a campaign against the undesirable practice of Sati. Finally, on December 4, 1829, Lord Bentinck stopped the practice ofsati Raja Rammohan Roy was a reformer and a worshipper of truth. He founded the Hindu College in Calcutta and tried his best to eradicate the undesirable practices in the society. That is why Raja Rammohan Roy is referred to as the ‘pioneer’ of the religious and social movement in India.
