The present article by Dr. Vishnu Bhagwan provides a detailed analysis of the panchayati raj system in India. It covers various phases of the development through which the panchayati raj has been through during the last five six decades beginning from the fifties to the present day scenario. The author provides a critical appraisal of the present system of panchayati raj, its weaknesses and strengths. In the end it provides the agenda for future reforms. It is a well documented article and covers briefly almost all the facets of panchayati raj in India.
