Corruption has negatively impacted the entire gamut of the Nigerian state, particularly since independence in 1960. No where else is it more manifest than in the country's march towards development. Despite the efforts by successive administrations/regimes to checkmate this national menace, a developmental pathway for the country remains a tall order. This paper uses the historical method of analysis to examine the attendant variables of the discourse. In doing so, specific case studies were examined to flesh-out the basic issues. It concludes that with effective leadership that guarantees a sustained fight against corruption, Nigeria could be repositioned on the right path to sustainable development.
