Abstract

Deputy Commissioner is the most important position in district administration since the colonial period, though the pomp and show of the post has shined out to some extent with the change in nature of State and bureaucracy after independence. Inspite of it, the role, the powers and the functions of Deputy Commissioner are rising day by day and now he is the most vital officer of State Government at district level, who has to perform far and wide duties which are more undefined than defined varying from law and order to development and welfare, planning to monitoring besides, collection of revenue, to maintain harmony and coordination among various district level officers working in the line departments in the district. In nutshell the progress, development and peace of a district is determined to a greater extent by the Deputy Commissioner.
