The Paper examines the parameters of quality and excellence in higher education. Being one of the largest in the world, Indian higher education system is gradually marching towards attaining leadership in higher education. Continuous efforts are being put to establishing high standards of quality to compete in the global environment. One such effort is the continuous assessment of the higher educational institutions. Assessment practices prevailing in USA, France and U. K. are compared with those in the Indian system. The concluding part of the paper deals with the general perspective of quality assessment.
