Abstract

The Right to Information Act (2005) is a noteworthy step to make administrative agencies more efficient, transparent, responsive and accountable. The Act makes it obligatory for the public authorities to maintain proper records and suo motu dissemination of information. There are some structural weaknesses, which demand the examination and evaluation of the role of public information officers (PIOs). It is in this context that the present paper has been devoted to know and find out the views of selected official respondents on the facets of implementation of RTI; and give suitable suggestions for revamping the implementation of the Act. The obtained data were analysed statistically by using frequencies, percentages and Chi-square. Results revealed that majority of respondent PIOs are deficient in knowledge, training and infrastructure/funds etc. for the implementation of the Act. The present findings cannot be considered generalised as these are based on the small sample. In this regard, for more generalised findings large scale studies are suggested.
